Reflections on Community in Layered Shapes
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
(total time: 4 hours broken up into multiple sessions as needed)
This project engages students in distilling ideas on local community through design. Using colored nylon mesh, students collaborate in creating shapes for a fence mural project. The mesh shapes will be cut and edged with seam binding. Students collaborate in teams to create a composition for the installation of their art. Students write how their designs celebrate their community. These written statements will be included on QR codes embedded in each design.

- Workshops 1: Students discuss visual vocabulary, value shifts and visual rhythm in opening engagement collage activity using monochromatic shapes. Students sketch initial design studies and explore cutting and layering mesh shapes.
- Workshop 2: Students refine their designs into silhouettes. Students sketch rough layout for groupings of their shapes for the fence installation. Students collaboratively finalize the layout for the motifs and diagram the composition of their designs for the fence. Students collaboratively write a statement explaining how their art represents their community.
